FOR FARMING FAMILIES

Farm succession starts with one conversation

By Sam Marwood

Every farming family knows the conversation is coming. Who takes the farm on. Where Mum and Dad end up living.

And whether it can be fair on everyone.

Most families avoid it for years. Some avoid it until it's too late.

Why farm succession stalls

The usual succession guides start with legal structures and financial models. They assume the family is ready to plan. They hand you a checklist and wish you luck.

The Cultivate Farms Succession Guide starts somewhere else entirely. It starts with the human problem: how do you get a family to have a conversation that nobody wants to have?

That's the real barrier. The law, the money and the options all come after it.

What families go through

Over the past decade, Cultivate Farms has walked alongside hundreds of farming families across Australia. The parents, the kids, the relatives.

We've heard it all. The pride in what they've built. The worry about what comes next.

The arguments about fairness. The silence when someone asks the hard question. The relief when they realise the options are wider than they thought.

Cultivate Farms began with a belief that there had to be better options than "sell up and hope for the best". What we've learned since is that the plan itself isn't the hard part.

Getting everyone to the table is. The guide was designed for exactly that.

Who the guide is for

The guide is for any member of a farming family who knows the succession conversation needs to happen.

You might be the retiring farmer who's ready to plan. The eager child who wants a pathway. The child who doesn't want the farm and needs a way to say that.

You might be the spouse who's been waiting, or the partner who married in and can see what's happening. The sibling in the city. The grandchild who loves the farm.

You might be the parent who wants to push capable kids into action, or the parent who wants to make it easy. Or the farmer reading this under protest.

Wherever you sit, the guide meets you there, with what you need to get to the table, have the conversation, and build a plan.

A way in for everyone

That's the point of it. The retiring farmer isn't the only one with a way in. Every member of the family has one, whatever their place in it.

It starts with two pictures: what a great outcome looks like, and what happens when nobody plans. It names the barriers plainly. It helps you get the family to the table. Then it walks you through the planning itself, your full range of options, and what to do when things go wrong.

Your first step

Keep the first ask small and easy to say yes to. Instead of "let's plan", try "let's just understand what everyone wants". Take the decision off the table.

Let everyone be heard first. Agreement can come later, a step at a time.

Someone has to go first

If someone in your family needs to be brave enough to go first, and you think that someone might be you, it's going to be worth it.

Start with the conversation. The plan follows.
