What have you been doing to get farm ready?

Practicing agronomist, 8 years experience in the sugarcane, soybean industry in the central Queensland coastal region. 1-3 year agronomic experience in aerobic rice, mungbean, chickpea and pasture management. I have had the opportunity through my profession to extend my knowledge in a number of different farming practices including maximising yield; conventional through to organic farming plus the movement towards more innovative practices; minimising tillage; incorporating livestock into cropping; practices that move to a reduced reliance on inputs without compromising yield. I have delivered at a number of conferences topics including implementing legume rotations, reducing fertiliser inputs, insect pest management, giant rats tail control. My main role in my organisation is to extend on practices that are more environmentally sustainable while maximising yield. I have traveled overseas professionally to increase my understanding of different farming systems. New Zealand, Canterbury plains visiting dairy, venison, small seed and arable farmers. The corn belt in the USA investigating strip tillage and maximising soybean yields. Part of my job role has been to manage and coordinate the farming operations on a small scale of over 10 different pulses, oilseeds and cereal grain cropping options including multiple varieties including sourcing seed, planting, irrigation, herbicide, insecticide, fungicide and harvesting.

Why are you passionate about farming?

I live and breath agriculture every day, full time as an extension agronomist and in my spare time trialing what I learn. Professionally I conduct scientific trial work, at home I trial regenerative farming practices such as intensive grazing with cattle, sheep, goats and chickens. My passion is soil health and seeing the environment evolve with a change in management. I study out of the box thinkers, how they have been able to reduce inputs and remain profitable. Whenever the opportunity arises I seek out to learn more in different agricultural industries. I am from a non farming background, but yet growing food sustainably is my passion, regenerating farm land to complement the environment with the ability to make a profit is my goal in life.

Best days of being a farmer:

I currently work as an agronomist in Bundaberg, Queensland, I am willing to move anywhere within Australia in any farming system. My desire is to farm any crop with the ability to incorporate livestock into the system. My passion is to grow food, working with experienced farmers to gain practical experience is what I desire. Farm ownership full or part is my end goal.
