 Self employed farmer. We run 10 000acres in South Africa with a mixed farming from livestock ( beef cattle and wool sheep ), wheat, intensive pastures including cover crops, organic and biological regenerative ag practices, eco tourism and related enterprises.
 Studied marketing, worked in IT and ran own business in Johannesburg. Ran volunteer online marketing organisation for 15 years and have been farming full time in a family farming business for the past 18 years.

What have you been doing to get farm ready?

We run a family farming enterprise in South Africa. I am a 4th generation farmer and currently farm a 4000ha unit. Due to unfortunate circumstances politically and safety issues we are forced to consider relocating to continue pursuing our passion of regenerative and biological agriculture.

Why are you passionate about farming?

Farming and food production is the beginning and the end of all things man needs to survive physically. Leave the world a better place than you found it and regenerative agriculture is the only way to help move the commercially farmed environment in a sustainable direction.

Best days of being a farmer:

We farm at the foot a mountain range called the Drakensberg in central South Africa. Altitude ranges from 1800 - 2800m above sea level with a wetter summer environment and cold dry winters reaching -20 degrees celcius. Fertile basalt soils provide a natural highlands savannah grass biome with southern facing scrub. A environment ideally suited to grazing animals. We have been awarded South Africa's Grassland farmer of the year awards 3 times during the family ownership and management of the land. Daily tasks are numerous considering the complexity of working with nature, climate change, political instability and numerous other challenges only a practicing farmer can understand and relate too. Firstly we are soil farmers with preserving its biology and fragile ecosystem. Then we are grass and biomass producers who's ultimate reward is developing and improving the soils humus levels and related water holding capacity. Using animals to stimulate this result and lastly machinery to manage the lean times of production in a natural cycle by compensating with cropping and pasture management.
