What have you been doing to get farm ready?

We have a 300 acre farm that we are currently breeding beef cattle on.On top of this we have completed several courses on pastures, cattle handling, cattle markets and cattle assessment, chemicals, first aid etc and will continue to do so.We also have a heap of books from places like Tocal college about all of these topics as well which we have read several times and continue to refer back to.We are also researching the LPA Quality Assurance program as well as becoming MSA certified.

Why are you passionate about farming?

Farming is in our blood. Both Jody and myself come from farming families, our grandparents were dairy farmers and jodys parents still operate small farms. We love the lifestyle it provides, being out in the paddocks and raising cattle. We want to provide consistent quality produce to the world. Our kids also are so passionate about farming so to build a business to bring them into once they finish school is the ultimate goal.We would like to sell to direct markets so we can receive feedback from the consumer on our product to ensure we can make adjustments on farm to enhance the quality of our produce, quality and consistency is what we are focused on.

Best days of being a farmer:

Our ideal farm would be located in the Hunter valley Nsw.We would run an operation where we could breed cattle as well as finish the calves, giving us more options with markets.Ideally it would have some flats with irrigation for fodder crops and hay production. Our best day on farm would be waking up in the morning knowing we no longer have to rely on off farm income. It could involve anything from cattle work, seeding, spraying, mechanical work and even fencing. Our breed of choice is Angus cross. We are currently running a black Limousin bull over our Angus cows to give higher muscling and better carcase yields while still maintaining the softness and marbling of the angus.
