What have you been doing to get farm ready?

Currently own and manage 120ac of highly productive land, looking to expand out to 3-400 acres, step back from full time teaching in ag and ramp up my time farming. Hold Certificates and diplomas in ag and equine.

Why are you passionate about farming?

My passion is making the most from country with the least amount of input. Currently we sow mixed species crops and pastures that we graze year round with cattle and sheep, and when suits, cut silage/hay, specifically for the horse market. When sowing we include lime, however do not use synthetic fertilizers, rather prefer to unlock stored nutrients by bringing the pH of the soil closer to 6.4 by liming. Eventually we will establish permanent pastures that require little maintenance, and aim to be breeding from 30 head of cattle annually and 50 head of sheep 3 times every 2 years on the 120ac.

Best days of being a farmer:

My best day on the farm is every day where my family is involved, working on the tractor with my sons, moving stock with my family, bbq lunches in back yard, or cutting wood along the creek while the family roasts marshmallows and we enjoy the views of the snow capped mountains!
