What have you been doing to get farm ready?

I have been working, studying, teaching and sharing methods within agriculture for 15 years. I have had great interest in livestock my whole life and studied a diploma in Agriculture straight out of school. From there I have been a farm hand, and an assistant manager for a 500 cow breeding Angus Stud north of Melbourne. I have worked and still employed on a full time basis as a teacher/program co-coordinator in the Certificate and diploma level TAFE qualifications in Agriculture. I am enrolled at CSU in a part time Bachelor of Agriculture and passed my first unit with a Distinction. I have maintained my currency by continuously contributing my time, including all aspects of animal husbandry, nutrition and mustering of stations in central NSW and also in the High country. I am also always networking with employers of students and colleagues alike.

Why are you passionate about farming?

I am very passionate about farming, a great part of my working career has been sharing my passion and knowledge and inspiring younger generations to get into or continue their dreams in farming. I love what farming gives back, the achievements, the outcomes and the lifestyle. It is not a 9-5 job and it is forever changing from day to day. My children deserve to grow up with the freedom and exploration farming gives back. The life story of paddock to plate, care, compassion and responsibility to the animals and the environment.

Best days of being a farmer:

My dream farm is in the North-east of Victoria or the southern Riverina, beautiful homestead and gardens. Rotational grazed paddocks and highly productive cattle and sheep. My best days would be watching and recording the fresh calves and lambs being born on a crisp morning, strong, cleaned and drinking from mum. The kids would be in toe watching the them come to life and learning where it all starts. Production from the livestock and paddocks is what drives me to succeed, exploring options and growing the soil profile and fertility using less chemicals and medications to achieve these outcomes. Collecting as much data is key, looking at numbers, graphs and comparisons and sparking discussions for future outcomes.
